The devastating situation of women in Gaza
Israeli air strikes and ground attacks in Gaza have killed over 22,000 Palestinians since 7 October and left more than 57,000 injured. Thousands more are buried under the rubble. Around 68% of Palestinians killed in Gaza are women and children. Nearly 8,000 children have been killed. A child is killed in Gaza every 10 minutes.
The unprecedented number of lives lost and the rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis caused by the escalating violence of Israel’s attacks, go far beyond legitimate self-defence considerations. The Palestinian Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) National Committee, women’s unions and women’s grassroots movements have called on women’s organisations around the world to support their struggle against what has been described by UN experts, international scholars and an increasing number of states as an unfolding genocide against the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza.
At the same time, international agencies including the World Health Organisation have warned that women and children, especially newborn babies are disproportionately bearing the brunt of the escalating Israeli onslaught. 50,000 pregnant women can’t access ante-natal care, with more than 180 giving birth every day, many of them without anesthesia, electricity or medical supplies. By mid November, at least 8 newly-born babies in Al Shifa hospital lost their life as staff struggled to keep 37 babies alive when their incubators failed through lack of fuel to run them.
Israel is using food starvation as a weapon of war against civilians. Without food, children and women, especially pregnant and breast-feeding women, are at increased risk of death due to malnutrition. Without access to water and sanitation, women and girls are unable to manage their menstrual hygiene, which can lead to physical risks, induce anxiety and damage their mental health.
Lack of clean water is a crisis for parents – usually mothers – trying to feed babies. Overcrowding conditions have provoked infection diseases among the population. Women and girls are facing risks of gender-based violence in overcrowded shelters.
We must respond to the call from Palestinian women to support their struggle against the violent Israeli occupation and ongoing genocide. They are calling on us to take organised action to escalate BDS campaigns against apartheid Israel and to demand that our UK government:
- Implement an immediate ceasefire
- Ensure life-saving aid supply to Gaza
- Reject forced transfers of population
- Ensure protection for Palestinians in Gaza
- Impose a comprehensive embargo against Israel on arms and military technology
- Demand that the International Criminal Court investigate war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the crimes of genocide and apartheid, perpetrated by Israel.
