Tell tomorrow’s NEC – the Labour whip should be restored to Jeremy Corbyn MP

Please consider sending an email tonight or first thing tomorrow morning to members of Labour’s NEC, as the NEC will be considering a motion about Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday.

On Tuesday 25 January the NEC will consider a motion that if passed resolves:

‘To urge the leadership to respect the party’s dispute panel outcome, that found Jeremy Corbyn had not breached the party’s rules. As such we call on the Chief Whip to review their decision and arrange for the Parliamentary whip to be immediately restored to Jeremy Corbyn.’

Text of the motion tabled for Labour’s NEC meeting

This meeting notes:

That, as the twice-elected former leader of the Labour Party, the continued withholding of the Labour whip from Jeremy Corbyn MP is a deeply divisive act by the leadership of the party and the Chief Whip;

That, coinciding with the trigger ballot process and re-selection of sitting MPs, the act of withholding the whip at this time is disbarring Jeremy Corbyn from this process, increasing the tension and anger amongst party members and moving us further from the unity that is required to take on this Government;

That Jeremy Corbyn has been the Labour MP for Islington North since 1983 and that his majority at the last General Election was 26,188.

This meeting believes:

That disbarring the sitting Member of Parliament from the process is extremely disrespectful to the people of Islington North who have overwhelmingly elected Jeremy Corbyn as their Labour MP for nearly four decades.

Disbarring Jeremy Corbyn at the next General Election brings with it the added danger of local electorate punishing the Labour Party, should they not have the candidate they wish in place, creating a huge media storm in the process.

This meeting resolves:

Dear member of Labour’s NEC,

CC: Alan Campbell (Chief Whip)

I am a Labour Party member, writing to request that you support the motion, calling for the whip to be restored to the Labour Party's former Leader Jeremy Corbyn, that has been tabled for the NEC meeting on Tuesday 25 January.

As you will be aware, a panel of NEC members, acting on behalf of the Labour Party NEC, has already considered these matters and decided on 17 November 2020 to readmit Jeremy to party membership. That democratically-made decision of the party ought to be respected.

The adverse treatment of Labour's former Leader continues to be a regrettable distraction from the urgent task of confronting the Tory government over its damaging policies and from preparing for this May’s elections. Our party is more effective when we are all working together and not distracted by unnecessary internal division.
