Lib Dems only support “will of the people” when it suits them.
In the early 20th century, when they were in government, the Liberals did not support proportional representation (PR) But since then, the Liberals /Lib Dems constantly prattle on about it. They say that PR allows the “will of the people” to be properly expressed.
At the 2019 General Election, Jo Swinson stated that if ‘Leave’ won another referendum, the Lib Dems would totally ignore the result. The “will of the people” could get stuffed. But of course, this is the party that ruthlessly imposed the cruelties of austerity on the population.
Scottish Independence – read the small print!
The SNP has made much of a Survation poll suggesting that support for independence is now as high as 75%.
But the poll also revealed:
a) This support depends on independence being “economically beneficial”.
b) Only 10% favoured joining the euro.
c) Only 5% supported a switch to a Scottish currency.
However the SNP’s agreed policy involves (a), (b) and (c)! The SNP is committed to an Independent Scotland joining the EU and has already accepted that the EU’s requirements must therefore be adhered to. So, the SNP is advocating an independent Scottish currency followed by membership of the euro. Of course, the extra £2,000 per head from the UK Treasury under the favourable Barnett Formula, will cease. Instead Scotland will have to make a net contribution to the EU’s annual budget.
“Caste : The Lies That Divide Us”
This recent book by Pulitzer winner, Isabel Wiekerson, shows that beyond the specific categorisations of race or class, a process of creating artificial hierarchies can be developed to subjugate groups of people in any culture. These processes range from assertions of divine will and natural law, to strategies of “cruelty as a means of control”. As Bhimrao Ambedkar, an early champion of India’s “untouchables” stated – “Caste is (just) a notion, it is a state of mind”.
Blairites lack insight, per Sunday Times (as if we didn’t know!)
”Blairites struggle to grasp the role of (so – called (Ed. ) liberal politicians in the current malaise – the catastrophe of Iraq, which destroyed trust in politics; the failure to recognise the plight of working classes, whose jobs were off-shored by globalisation; the financial crisis; the creeping centralisation of the European Union; and the creation of the euro”.
