We are sorry to tell you that our much-loved comrade, Maria Fyfe passed away on Thursday 3rd December after a short illness. She was a member of CLPD since the 1980s. Maria was first elected as MP for Glasgow Maryhill in 1987 and was the only Scottish woman in the Commons where she was to remain for 14 years. A close friend of Jeremy Corbyn, Maria was also an internationalist, and a relentless campaigner for peace and social justice and a more equal society. With her friend Ann Henderson, she played a pivotal role in the 50-50 campaign for the Scottish Parliament which was inaugurated in 1999. Her socialism was based on her working-class roots, her trade union activism and her community, one of the most deprived areas in the UK. She represented everything that was the best in the Labour Party. Recently she led the campaign to get a statue of Mary Barber erected in Glasgow. To quote Jeremy Corbyn, she was “a great fighter for the people, always speaking up for women and a giant of our movement. She continued to teach and inspire young socialists in the Labour movement right up to the end”.
